What is a Cranial Prosthesis
What Is a Cranial Prosthesis?
A Cranial Prosthesis is the medical term for a custom-made wig, hairpiece, or topper designed for individuals experiencing hair loss due to medical conditions. This includes men, women, and children who may be undergoing chemotherapy, suffering from alopecia, or experiencing other health-related hair loss.
How It Works
1. Contact Your Insurance Provider
Start by reaching out to your insurance company. Ask if they cover a Cranial Prosthesis—not a wig. Important questions to ask:
- Do you cover Cranial Prostheses?
- What is the coverage amount?
- Do you cover human hair, synthetic hair, or both?
2. Get a Prescription
If your insurance confirms coverage, schedule an appointment with your dermatologist, oncologist, or primary care doctor. They will assess your hair loss and, if it is due to a medical condition, provide a prescription for a Cranial Prosthesis.
Make sure the CPT code A9282 or S8095 is included on the prescription—your insurance provider can confirm which code they require.
3. Schedule a Consultation (Free of Charge)
Once you have your prescription, we’ll schedule a complimentary consultation to go over the details of your Cranial Prosthesis. We’ll discuss:
- Fit and comfort
- Hair type (human or synthetic)
- Style preferences
- Color, length, and more
4. We Handle the Order and Insurance Billing
After finalizing your custom design, we’ll submit the claim to your insurance provider. Depending on your coverage—full, partial, or reimbursement-based—we will fulfill your prescription accordingly.
5. Receive Your Custom Cranial Prosthesis
Once approved, your Cranial Prosthesis will be custom-made to fit your needs, just like any medical device. Some insurance plans allow more than one medical wig so you may be eligible for future replacements depending on your coverage.
Do I Qualify?
To find out if you qualify, call your insurance provider and ask if your plan covers a Cranial Prosthesis. Do not use the word "wig"—that term is considered cosmetic and may cause your claim to be denied. A Cranial Prosthesis is classified as medical-grade equipment, and using the correct terminology is essential.
Hair loss conditions that may qualify include, but are not limited to:
- Chemotherapy or radiation therapy
- Alopecia (Areta, Totalis, Universalis)
- Gastric bypass or bariatric surgery
- Lupus
- Burn injuries
- Trichotillomania (hair-pulling disorder)
- Thyroid disorders
The most important step is to confirm your hair loss is caused by a medical condition and obtain a prescription from a licensed medical professional. We are here to walk you through the entire process.
